Sam Pinkleton to direct ‘Annie’ on Broadway for the musical’s 50th anniversary
A new production of the 1977 musical will open on Broadway in fall 2027, the show's 50th anniversary. The theater, dates and cast have not been announced yet.
A new Broadway production of “Annie” is set to open in fall 2027, lining up with the musical’s 50th anniversary. Tony Award-winning director Sam Pinkleton will stage it.
Pinkleton’s recent Broadway credits include “Oh, Mary!” and “The Rocky Horror Show.” In a statement, he described the orphan’s story in local terms: “Annie is everything I love about New York City: gutsy, fearless, and funny as hell.” He said his creative team plans to take on the show with “joy and abandon.”
Annie Broadway revival: what is known so far
The musical first reached Broadway in 1977, won the Tony for Best Musical and went on to inspire several film versions. Its score gave theater fans “Tomorrow” and “It’s the Hard-Knock Life.” Earlier Broadway revivals ran in 1997 and 2012, so the 2027 staging will be the show’s fourth time on Broadway.
At the center of the plot is a determined young orphan. She slips away from the cruel Miss Hannigan and ends up in the wealthy household of Daddy Warbucks, and neither of them comes out of it the same.
The revival sticks with the material audiences already know. Thomas Meehan’s original book returns, along with the songs Charles Strouse composed and Martin Charnin wrote the words for. Meehan’s family called the musical a New York story at heart and said, “This isn’t a revival; it’s a homecoming.”
Who is producing, and what comes next
Michael Alden is producing with Hal Luftig of Halcyon Theatricals, Cathy Dantchik and Kevin Connor. Producers have not yet announced the theater, performance dates or casting. They say more details will come later.
