Editorial Policy
Last updated: September 17, 2026
How2NewYork exists to help people understand what is happening in New York City and what it means for them. This policy explains how our stories are made.
Sources
Our stories are based on public information: official statements and data from city, state and federal agencies (for example the MTA, NYPD, NYC Parks and the National Weather Service), court records, public meetings, event organizers, and news published by other New York media. We write every story in our own words. We do not copy other publications’ text, and we use direct quotes only when they are short and clearly attributed to the person who said them.
We only publish facts that appear in our sources. We do not add details, numbers or quotes that we cannot trace back to a source.
Use of AI tools
We use AI tools to help draft, summarize and structure stories from our sources. Every draft goes through automated checks before publication: a fact check that compares the story with its sources, and an originality check that flags passages too close to the original wording. Stories that fail the fact check are held back for review instead of being published. We are responsible for everything we publish, whether or not AI tools were involved.
Fairness and crime coverage
- People are presumed innocent. We write that someone was charged with or accused of a crime, never that they committed it unless a court has convicted them.
- We attribute claims to the people or agencies making them.
- We avoid naming crime victims and minors unless there is a clear public interest and the information is already public.
Photos
Photos are credited under each image. If you own a photo used on this site and want it credited differently or removed, email hi@how2newyork.com and we will act promptly.
Independence and advertising
Advertising and sponsorships never decide what we cover or how. Sponsored content, when we publish it, is clearly labeled as Sponsored or Presented by. We do not accept payment for news coverage.
Corrections
We fix errors as soon as we confirm them. Minor fixes (typos, broken links) are made without a note. When a correction changes a fact, date, name or number, we update the story and its “updated” time. To report an error, email hi@how2newyork.com with Correction in the subject line and a link to the story.
Updates
Developing stories may be updated as new information becomes available. Articles show when they were published, and search engines receive the date of the last update.
