Patchogue’s old roller rink swaps skates for New Orleans jazz this November
The Jazz Room brings a cabaret-style night of brass, blues and ragtime to Stereo Garden, a Patchogue event space that started life as a 1940s roller rink.
Brass, blues and ragtime are headed east this fall. The Jazz Room, a show built around the music of New Orleans, takes over Stereo Garden in the Long Island village of Patchogue in early November. The event’s own details don’t agree on the date: one listing shows Saturday, Nov. 7, at 6:30 p.m., and another says Nov. 8. Check the date on your ticket before you plan the trip. Tickets currently start at $36, and more evenings are on the schedule, including one on Jan. 15, 2027.
What to expect at the Patchogue jazz night
The program looks back to the first decades of the 1900s, when bands in New Orleans turned the city’s nightspots into the birthplace of hot jazz. Expect that era’s ragtime, blues and swinging brass. A live band plays well-known standards such as “When the Saints Go Marching In” and “On the Sunny Side of the Street,” and the musicians are free to improvise rather than repeat each tune note for note. The performance lasts about an hour.
Up to 900 people fit inside Stereo Garden, yet the night is set up like a small cabaret. Everyone shares tables, and within each ticketed zone the seats go to whoever arrives first. If you want to sit close to the band, get there early.
Stereo Garden, a former roller rink in Patchogue
Skaters were the first crowd here. The building went up in the 1940s as the Patchogue Roller Rink, and the old layout still shapes the room: over 20,000 square feet of floor with no columns in the way, bare wood rafters overhead and a high, curved ceiling that gives a brass section plenty of space. For this show, the old rink floor becomes a dim room filled with shared tables and drinks. The venue sits at 9 Railroad Avenue.
Why Patchogue became a night-out destination
Three decades ago the picture was very different. In 1996, the downtown had boarded-up storefronts and fire damage you could see from the sidewalk. Since then the village has invested in Main Street, restored older buildings and given them new uses, built housing near its LIRR station and made the center easier to get around on foot. The waterfront village on the South Shore is now full of restaurants, bars and venues.
That comeback earned Downtown Patchogue a spot on the American Planning Association’s list of Great Neighborhoods. The group called it a model for walkability, redevelopment and growth around transit.
