Yankee Stadium is at One East 161st Street in the Bronx. The Yankees say mass transit is the best way to get there: the 4 and D trains stop at the 161st Street/Yankee Stadium station, at East 161st Street and River Avenue. The one rule to know before you leave home is that only soft-sided bags 16 inches by 16 inches by 8 inches or smaller get in, and the stadium has no storage area for anything else.

How to get to Yankee Stadium by subway

The 4 train (East Side) and the D train (Sixth Avenue) both stop at the 161st Street/Yankee Stadium station, on East 161st Street and River Avenue. The B train (Sixth Avenue) also stops there, but only on weekdays.

The Yankees send riders to mta.info or the MTA’s 511 line for service information. Check service changes before you leave on How2NewYork’s live subway status page, which shows delays and changes line by line.

The NYPD Transit Bureau asks fans to keep phones and other devices put away in the station, to stay away from the train doors with a device in hand, and to watch for pickpockets on crowded platforms and trains. Its other tips:

  • Carry your wallet in a front pocket, not a back pocket.
  • Keep purses and handbags in front of you, not slung over a shoulder.
  • Don’t sleep on train or platform benches.
  • Stay alert at fare machines, and walk away if you feel uncomfortable.

Metro-North and bus service to Yankee Stadium

Metro-North offers train service to the stadium from anywhere in its service territory. For more information, the Yankees point riders to mta.info or the MTA’s 511 line.

Several city bus lines serve the stadium:

  • Bx6 and Bx13: stop at East 161st Street and River Avenue.
  • Bx1 and Bx2: stop at East 161st Street and the Grand Concourse, a short walk from the stadium.
  • BxM4: stops at the Grand Concourse and East 161st Street northbound, and at East 158th Street southbound.

For fares and ways to pay across the subway, buses and commuter rail, see the How2NewYork transport guide.

Driving and parking at Yankee Stadium

For GPS, use One East 161st Street, Bronx, New York. The stadium sits off the Major Deegan Expressway (Interstate 87):

  • Northbound I-87: Exit 4 (East 149th Street/145th Street Bridge) or Exit 5 (East 161st Street/Macombs Dam Bridge).
  • Southbound I-87: Exit 5 (East 161st Street/Macombs Dam Bridge).

The Yankees do not control or operate the lots and garages around the stadium. The city gave City Parking the rights to set rates, refund policies and lot rules. Prepaid parking for a single game comes from City Parking at yankees.cityparking.nyc or 718-588-7817, which the team also lists for lot availability through the season. The Yankees’ pages do not publish parking prices.

Security screening and entry

Under a Major League Baseball rule, every guest goes through a metal detector before entering. That includes children. Metal detectors are at every gate. Once you have been screened and your bag and small personal item have been checked, your ticket is scanned.

Before you walk through, take cellphones, cameras and any large metal objects out of your pockets and put them in a small plastic container. Security staff look at the container and your bag at a screening table next to the detector, and your belongings stay near you the whole time. Belts, jackets and shoes stay on for now.

Infants and toddlers can be carried through. Children who can walk may be asked to walk through on their own. If the detector picks something up, you’ll be sent to the side for a hand-held wand or a pat-down and asked to show the item.

The Yankees strongly urge guests to allow extra time for entry. Stadium management can refuse any item or any person it considers a safety risk, special rules can apply at a specific event, and any policy can change without notice.

Yankee Stadium bag policy

Only two kinds of bags are allowed in: an MLB-compliant bag, which right now means soft-sided and no bigger than 16 inches by 16 inches by 8 inches, and a small soft-sided personal item. Both can be physically searched, X-rayed or both.

Hard-sided bags and containers are banned at any size. The one exception is an empty, reusable, non-glass water bottle of 24 ounces or less.

The stadium has no storage area. If your bag is too big or holds a banned item, you can’t check it at the gate. The Yankees warn fans who arrive by public transportation to take extra care not to bring prohibited items, because no exceptions will be made.

Prohibited items at Yankee Stadium

Along with oversized and hard-sided bags, the official list bans glass bottles and cans, alcohol, illegal drugs, and firearms, knives or weapons of any kind. Many other items fans might not expect are also banned:

  • Selfie sticks, monopods, tripods, professional camera gear, video cameras and audio or video recording equipment
  • Laptops, drones, laser pens and television sets (tablets are allowed)
  • Baseball bats of any size, plus brooms, poles, staffs and sticks
  • Skateboards, hoverboards and other personal recreational vehicles
  • Air horns and other distracting noisemakers, and any device that could interfere with players, other guests, broadcasts or stadium tech services
  • Sports helmets, hard hats, masks and costumes
  • Projectiles such as flying discs and beach balls, balloons, flowers, confetti, glitter and fireworks
  • Aerosol cans, including mace, pepper spray and sunscreen
  • Animals, except service animals
  • Visibly obscene, indecent or inappropriate clothing

Banners, signs, flags and apparel must follow a separate stadium policy. Its full terms are not on the pages used for this guide, so check the official entry and carry-in policy before you make a sign.

Accessibility

Guests who can’t or don’t want to use the walk-through metal detector can ask for a hand-held wand or a pat-down instead. ADA-required mobility devices are exempt from the ban on personal recreational vehicles, and service animals that assist guests with disabilities are allowed in.

The Yankees’ transit, entry and parking pages do not cover accessible seating, accessible entrances or accessible parking. Ask the team about those directly before your visit.

Tickets, doors and what to know before you go

Your ticket is scanned only after screening and the bag check, so have it ready once you clear the table. The pages used for this guide do not publish gate opening times or a list of which gate to use. The Yankees’ ballpark section on mlb.com/yankees also lists a dining guide and a concourse map.

Since nothing can be stored at the stadium, pack only what passes the bag rule, empty your water bottle before you reach security, and check the NYC weather forecast so you don’t need anything bulky.
