Fatal shooting at Midtown’s 53rd Street-Seventh Avenue station leaves man in his 30s dead
According to police, an argument between two men began on the platform and carried over onto a train. The NYPD is searching for a person of interest.
Police said a man in his 30s was killed Saturday when he was shot inside a Midtown subway station, the 53rd Street-Seventh Avenue stop on the B, D and E lines. The shooting happened around noon, and the NYPD is searching for a person of interest.
According to police, two men got into an argument on the platform, and the confrontation carried over onto a train. Investigators do not yet know whether the gunfire happened on the train or on the platform. Police said it is also unclear whether the victim and the shooter knew each other.
Victim pronounced dead at Bellevue Hospital
The man suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and was brought to Bellevue Hospital. He was pronounced dead on arrival a little after 1 p.m., police said.
Detectives want to identify one particular person of interest in the homicide, according to the NYPD, which shared a photo of that person on social media.
Subway service and transit shootings this year
The MTA sent all questions about the case to the NYPD. Michael Kemper, who heads security for the transit agency, wrote that the MTA had been working with police “from the earliest minutes,” with a particular focus on pulling video from cameras on platforms and inside train cars.
While police investigated, MTA service alerts showed disruptions to D and E trains in both directions in Manhattan on Saturday.
Through Oct. 11, NYPD figures counted four people shot in the transit system in 2026. During the same stretch of 2025, the count was two.
