Gracie Mansion will host a meeting on Monday between two politicians who agree on very little: Mayor Zohran Mamdani and President Trump. The president is due in the city for the United Nations General Assembly, and the sit-down will be the first time the two have been face to face since February.

In a statement, the mayor’s office said, “The meeting will focus on issues affecting New York City and New Yorkers.”

Opposite politics, an open line

Their political positions sit at opposite ends of the map, which has not stopped the two from getting along; the rapport between them has been friendly enough to draw comment. February was the last time they shared a room, and the months since have not been silent ones. They text.

The mayor has also worked the geography. Trump grew up in Queens, and Mamdani has returned to that detail more than once, using the president’s claim on the outer boroughs as common ground while he tries to keep relations with the Trump administration constructive rather than combative.

A meeting during General Assembly week

The timing puts the two men together in the thick of the General Assembly, the yearly stretch when world leaders and their motorcades arrive in Manhattan, security perimeters close off blocks at a time and gridlock days grip Midtown. City Hall’s business with Washington will be conducted against that backdrop.

Seven months separate February’s meeting from Monday’s, and in that time the texting kept a channel open between a president and a mayor whose politics rarely overlap. The agenda described by the mayor’s office is a local one: the issues facing New York City and the people who live in it.
