Macombs Dam Park next to Yankee Stadium waits on repairs after a fire and a funding gap

After a spring fire and years of wear, the park built where the old stadium stood still has no full rebuild. About $48 million is lined up for a job approved at $54 million.

Macombs Dam Park, across the street from Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, has a crumbling track and a damaged field months after an April fire. A full renovation is on hold because the approved project costs more than the money set aside for it.

The park sits on the footprint of the original Yankee Stadium. Building the replacement ballpark cost the neighborhood public parkland, and a deal to make up for that loss produced Macombs Dam Park, which opened in 2010. Local leaders now say its decline shows how the South Bronx was let down on what it had been promised.

Fire damage and a worn-out track at Macombs Dam Park

In April 2026 a fire burned through the park’s track, turf and bleachers. Community organizer Durga Sreenivasan, who drew attention to the damage on Instagram, said the blaze ruined sports equipment used by youth teams and left the field with large holes. She said no one knows how the fire started, even though the area has many cameras. Residents say the park is now too run-down to play or exercise in comfortably.

Council member Althea Stevens, who represents the area, said the park is one of the top concerns she hears from constituents. “The track is literally falling apart,” she said, adding that patches are missing, the gravel has worn thin and maintenance has not kept up with heavy use.

Why the Yankee Stadium park renovation is stalled

Stevens said she helped secure about $48 million from the prior administration for a complete repair. It is the largest amount she has won for any single project in her district. The full renovation was later approved at $54 million, and because the Parks Department needs all of the funding in hand before it starts some of the work, a gap of several million dollars has to be closed first. She called it frustrating that more money was requested after she had negotiated the first amount.

The city’s side of the story came from a NYC Parks spokesperson. Crews clean and look after the playing fields on a regular schedule, the spokesperson said, and the synthetic surface has been patched dozens of times since 2018 to make it safer and better to play on. The agency is still looking for ways to pay for a complete capital overhaul of the field.

The neighborhood the park serves is in the Bronx, which ranks last among New York State counties for health outcomes. Sreenivasan said the contrast with the stadium next door makes the park’s condition harder for residents to accept.
