Free flowers in Greenpoint: CJ Hendry’s Flower Market runs Oct. 17 to 19

For three days, Saturday, Oct. 17, through Monday, Oct. 19, artist CJ Hendry will fill 279 Calyer Street in Greenpoint with thousands of brightly colored blooms. Walking in costs nothing, and each visitor goes home with a single flower.

Doors open at 10 a.m. and close at 6 p.m. on each of the three days. Your first stem is on the house. If one is not enough for a vase, extra flowers are $5 apiece.

The market works like an art installation built around the everyday act of choosing flowers. Brooklyn is its next stop after a recent edition at Rockefeller Center, where thousands of soft floral creations filled the space and visitors could leave with a free stem.

Who is CJ Hendry

Originally from Brisbane, Hendry now works in New York. Her output ranges from drawings so detailed they look like photographs to large walk-in shows in which ordinary objects take on a giant presence. One earlier project set a pool of Olympic dimensions out in the Mojave.

Announcing the Brooklyn dates, Hendry said small things can bring people a lot of happiness and that everyone could use more of it. “There’s something so wonderful about seeing people come together over something as simple as a flower,” she said, adding a promise for the borough: “We have a lot of flowers!”

There are no set entry slots listed, so you can drop in at any point during opening hours on Saturday, Sunday or Monday. Bring a bag with a little spare room for the walk home.
