A dayslong search in the Bronx came to an end Wednesday evening, when U.S. Marshals arrested Angel Carrasco, 31, according to police. Investigators say he is the former boyfriend of Nathaly Ramirez, 23, and the father of her 8-month-old girl.

Early Tuesday, Ramirez had the baby in her arms when both were pushed from a 15th-floor balcony at an apartment building in Allerton, police say. The young mother died. Her daughter survived.

According to police, Carrasco now faces counts of murder and manslaughter, as well as attempted murder, attempted manslaughter and assault.

What police say happened on Olinville Avenue

Officers sent to the 18-story building at 2550 Olinville Ave. found the mother and child on the ground with injuries consistent with a fall from a height, the NYPD said. Jacobi Hospital received them both, and Ramirez could not be saved there. Investigators believe she wrapped herself around her daughter during the fall, which helped the girl live. Police said the infant is still in the hospital and is expected to recover.

Surveillance footage placed Carrasco inside the building and outside it, according to investigators, and Ramirez’s mother identified him to them as her daughter’s ex. The NYPD circulated a wanted poster bearing his photo earlier on Wednesday. Tenant Robin Mendzies recalled a man’s voice shouting “Jump!” followed by a heavy thud and a woman crying out, “No please, no!”

“This horrific tragedy weighs heavily on every team member who worked this case,” U.S. Marshal Ricky J. Patel said once Carrasco was in custody.

Earlier domestic violence cases

Police had dealt with the pair before. In January, officers responded to Ramirez’s apartment on two occasions, police said. On the first visit, Carrasco was arrested after police said he slapped her in the middle of a dispute. Within days, police said, he forced his way into her apartment while searching for her, which led to a burglary charge in a case that has since been sealed. In all, police have four domestic incident reports involving the couple.

By Wednesday, neighbors and friends had placed flowers and candles outside the building to remember her.
