Jersey City franchisee to open 33 Krispy Kreme shops in New York City and its suburbs
The new deal is with a Jersey City franchise operator. Krispy Kreme has not named any sites or opening dates, and Brooklyn still has no Krispy Kreme.
Krispy Kreme plans 33 new shops in New York City and its suburbs during the next five years, under a franchise agreement the doughnut chain announced Tuesday.
The Charlotte, North Carolina, company made the deal with Original Entrepreneurs LLC, a longtime franchisee that operates 12 Krispy Kreme shops today. Some of the new stores will open inside the city and others in nearby communities. Krispy Kreme has not named any sites or given opening dates.
Krispy Kreme locations in NYC today
The city has eight Krispy Kreme shops right now. They include a Times Square store and locations on Manhattan’s Upper East Side and Upper West Side. There is no Krispy Kreme anywhere in Brooklyn. The announcement did not name a Brooklyn site, but the borough is a gap the chain could fill as it grows in the region.
Who is behind the Krispy Kreme expansion
Original Entrepreneurs has its headquarters in Jersey City, New Jersey. Its first Krispy Kreme opened in 2017. After that the operator added shops in four other New Jersey towns, Springfield, East Rutherford, Paramus and Lakewood, before it moved into New York.
Karl Halligan and John Mondry, the company’s principals, said they plan to build on their existing relationship with Krispy Kreme and grow their footprint in the region.
For Krispy Kreme, the deal fits a broader approach. Relying on franchisees lets the chain add shops without covering the cost of each new location itself.
