Mamdani’s calls to Trump fail to free man shot by ICE in Marble Hill
The mayor says ICE took the wounded man from the hospital, and Hochul wants federal officials to make body camera video public.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani said late Thursday that he spent about two hours on the phone with President Donald Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin. Those calls did not win the release of a 28-year-old man shot by ICE agents in Marble Hill.
Authorities said agents were trying to detain him around 4 p.m. when he was hit in the neck. A 5-year-old boy, believed by police to be his son, was in the car and was not hurt. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the man was in stable condition when he reached NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital. Mamdani said ICE later took him away in unmarked vehicles. Our earlier report on the Marble Hill ICE shooting covers the first hours.
What the mayor asked of Trump and ICE
Mamdani spoke near the scene shortly before midnight while protesters chanted that he was complicit. He said he had asked Trump and Mullin to pull agents out of the area and to halt ICE enforcement in the city. He also called for the agency to be abolished. “There is no explanation for federal officers firing this many rounds into a car that has a 5-year-old in the car,” he said.
Gov. Kathy Hochul said she also spoke with the president and Mullin. She urged them to pause ICE enforcement across the state and to release body camera video to the public, and she called for “full transparency.”
What NYPD cameras showed in Marble Hill
Tisch said the NYPD had no role in the federal operation before shots were fired. Department cameras show the man in the driver’s seat of a gray Honda CR-V, backing into a parking space, as a plainclothes federal officer with a drawn gun approaches the driver’s side. A second plainclothes agent heads toward the front of the SUV, which then pulls forward out of the frame. The cameras did not capture the shooting. According to Tisch, the evidence shows seven shots came from at least one ICE agent. The man was hit below his left ear.
Officers who answered reports of a shooting found several men in face masks and construction-style vests, at least one of them holding a long gun. The wounded man was handcuffed and sitting on the ground. Police gave him aid and took him to the hospital in an NYPD vehicle.
The Department of Homeland Security called it a targeted arrest. DHS said the man, a Dominican national, has a prior grand larceny conviction, several earlier arrests and associations with the Trinitarios gang. ICE said the NYPD arrested him on Dec. 7, 2023, and released him a few days later. Hundreds of protesters gathered Thursday evening outside the Inwood hospital. Public Advocate Jumaane Williams said a father picking up his child had been shot. White House border czar Tom Homan said people in the country illegally should not be here.
