Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s administration said Monday that roughly 10,000 lower-income households waiting for subsidized childcare in New York City will be taken off the waitlist. The announcement was scheduled for a press conference later that day.

The aid flows through the Child Care Assistance Program, a mostly state-funded subsidy that pays for childcare and afterschool for kids between 6 weeks and 13 years old. Over 100,000 city families already hold a voucher, with eligibility based on income. For a household of four, the income limit is $116,000.

Why the childcare voucher waitlist grew

Since May 2025, the number of families left waiting has kept climbing, because demand outpaced what the program could pay for, even after major spending from both City Hall and Gov. Kathy Hochul. Three groups got priority for a new voucher or for keeping an existing one: homeless families, families raising a child with special needs and very low-income households, such as four people living on less than $99,000. Anyone else, whether newly approved or seeking a renewal, landed on the list.

According to providers, some parents removed their children from programs this year once their vouchers lapsed. Centers in lower-income neighborhoods lean heavily on voucher payments to pay for the care they offer. Mamdani said voucher access is “nothing short of transformational” for families who are struggling and for the providers who care for their children.

What happens next for families on the list

The waitlist currently holds upward of 16,000 families. City officials said those who remain eligible should be approved over the next several months. Hochul is contributing $475 million to clear the backlog. “No family should struggle to afford the child care they need and deserve,” the governor said.

Separately, the city announced in 2026 that it would cover every out-of-pocket voucher cost, which made care free for 22,000 families. For others, the weekly parent share depends on income and never exceeds $15, while families receiving public assistance owe nothing each week. A new city map lets parents look up programs that accept vouchers.
