Woman charged with trying to take a 4-year-old outside a Crown Heights McDonald’s
Police arrested a 47-year-old Flatlands woman days after a sidewalk struggle in which the boy's off-duty officer mother pulled him back.
Police arrested a 47-year-old woman late Friday over a sidewalk struggle earlier in the week, when a 4-year-old boy was pulled from the grandmother who was out with him at a Crown Heights McDonald’s.
Chrissy Payne, of Flatlands, was taken into custody around 11:45 p.m., the NYPD said. She faces an attempted kidnapping count, plus a charge of endangering a child’s welfare.
The encounter happened Monday in Crown Heights, at the McDonald’s on Eastern Parkway by Utica Avenue. The boy was with his 66-year-old grandmother when a woman took hold of him and started across the street with him, police said.
Off-duty NYPD officer pulled her son back on Eastern Parkway
The child’s mother, an off-duty police officer seven months into a pregnancy, was there and got him back, her family said. The father described a tug-of-war on the sidewalk, with the woman and the grandmother pulling the boy between them until he began to cry.
“The lady grabbed him by his shirt on his shoulder, and she wouldn’t let go,” he said.
“His mom pulled him away from her,” the father said of his wife. “She’s a strong woman.”
The woman walked off without the child, and no one was injured, police said.
What the Crown Heights charges mean
Payne stands accused of attempted kidnapping and of endangering a child’s welfare. Both are allegations, and nothing has been decided in court.
The boy was shaken by what happened but was back in class Thursday, his father said. His mother returned to work the same week.
