A stone house and studio that Impressionist painter Paul Arndt built in Woodstock in the 1920s is for sale for $3,950,000. The property at 21-23 Library Lane is on a quiet road near the center of town.

Arndt built it when Woodstock was at its peak as an art colony. He used it as both his home and his studio.

Inside the Woodstock stone house

The restoration of the main house kept its handcrafted character. The plaster walls were troweled by hand, some interior walls are stone, the beams are left bare and the wide-plank floors date to the original build. In the living room, a stone wood-burning fireplace is the focal point. French casement windows with wavy glass look out on century-old trees.

Counters in the kitchen are made of Siberian elm, paired with European Clé tile. From the sunny dining room, you can see the gardens.

The property also includes a three-bedroom cottage with vaulted, skylit ceilings. Its main room has pine floors in wide planks, a stone fireplace that is original to the building and cabinets built from reclaimed barn wood. A screened porch sits off the house. The bathrooms have Venetian plaster and vintage fixtures.

Landscape architect Michael Trapp designed the gardens. Mature trees shade layered plantings, and a vine-covered pergola serves as an outdoor dining spot. The main house and the cottage sit on separate parcels, each with its own grounds.
