A Manhattan deli that has been serving pastrami since 1937 is heading back to Seventh Avenue. Carnegie Deli is setting up in the space Stage Deli once occupied, only a few blocks from the address where Carnegie first opened its doors.

Carnegie Deli’s new location on Seventh Avenue

For longtime fans, the move puts the Carnegie name back on the same avenue, a short walk from where it started. Garrett Singer Architecture + Design drew up the new room, and the plan looks to the past. The firm’s work aims to bring back the feel and character that regulars remember from the first Carnegie.

The Wall of Fame sits at the center of that effort. The display honoring notable figures was one of the things the deli became known for, and the new space will have it again. Paired with the rest of the design, it gives the room a direct tie to the original.

Pastrami, corned beef and sandwiches named for stars

Carnegie’s reputation rests on oversized pastrami and corned beef sandwiches, with cheesecake close behind. That menu identity travels to the new address. The deli also plans to keep giving its sandwiches the names of famous people, drawing on Broadway performers, city icons and other figures from the wider culture. One longtime favorite on that list is “The Broadway Danny Rose.”

The brand now belongs to Sarri Harper, its third-generation owner and CEO. Harper is the granddaughter of former owner Milton Parker.

Put together, the Seventh Avenue address, the returning Wall of Fame and the celebrity-named sandwiches show a deli trying to pick up where the original left off, a few blocks from its first home.
